European Workshop 2008

The European Workshop “Copyright Regulation in Europe – An Enabling or Disabling Factor for Science Communication” was held in Berlin at the new building of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Nov. 14-15, 2008. The workshop was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung. The  program you can find here.

About the meeting

The meeting of designated experts on copyright matters from all EU member countries was an extraordinarily active workshop.  It aimed at funding ENCES, the European Network for Copyright in support of Education and Science. In this network institutions and organizations representing the interests of science and education will be able to work together in a virtual community whose aim is to support free access to and exchange of knowledge all over Europe.

The workshop devoted some time for the discussion of the EU Green Paper which might change the European copyright arena in the next couple of years. Many institutions which took part in the workshop  have sent their comments to the EU.

Result

As a main result of the workshop, the participants agreed to pursue the activities to establish ENCES, based on the text "Towards a European Network for Copyright in support of Education and Science (ENCES)".[pdf]
